Social Media Use by the Hadhrami Diaspora in Melbourne

Abstract

The Hadhrami ethnic group is indigenous to the Hadhramaut region of Yemen with a a history of migration, notably to southeast Asia. Social media use is influenced by the cultural norms and values of different communities. This study explores social media use among the small Hadhrami Indonesian community in Melbourne. Data from this little-researched group shows social media is used by this community for communication and information sharing, with social media practice influenced by both Arab and Indonesian culture. In addition, social media is used by younger members of the community to support offline activities by older generations. While research into the Hadhrami diaspora constitutes an emerging field of study (based on anthropological, diaspora, and historical theoretical frameworks), this study distinguishes itself through the use of a media lens to assess how the members of this diaspora maintain their identity and community, as southeast Asians of Arab descent living in a western secular nation.
