Abstract
India’s rapid economic growth has lifted millions out of poverty, yet inequality and lack of access to opportunities remain major challenges. This study explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can be harnessed to drive more inclusive and equitable economic development across India’s diverse regions and populations. Research Questions: How can AI technologies enhance access to financial services, education, healthcare, and other key drivers of economic mobility for underserved communities? What policies and governance frameworks are needed to ensure AI is developed and deployed ethically and without bias? How can India build AI capabilities and a skilled workforce to capitalize on this transformative technology? Data and Methodology: This mixed-methods study analyzes national datasets on economic indicators, access to services, and technology penetration across states and districts. Qualitative data from stakeholder interviews and field studies will provide insights into barriers, needs, and opportunities. AI modeling techniques will be employed to identify high-impact use cases and simulate potential impacts. The findings will highlight specific AI applications and implementation roadmaps to expand access to economic opportunities equitably. Policy recommendations cover data governance, skills development, public-private collaboration models, and strategies to mitigate AI risks like workforce displacement. Recommendations include: Harnessing AI’s potential while proactively addressing challenges will be critical for India to achieve inclusive growth and shared prosperity in the digital age. Cross-sector partnerships, citizen engagement, and evidence-based policymaking can ensure AI acts as an equalizing force.
