Abstract
For a long time, China has been seen as a youthful country, and there are lots of studies illustrating that the demographic dividend was a crucial factor in China’s super-rapid economic growth over the past few decades. However, as a result of the strict one-child policy which lasted about half a century as well as the significant increase in average life expectancy, the population ageing problem is beginning to emerge in today’s China. Although policymakers have been aware of this trend, current domestic remedies are not sufficient to address potential risks effectively. The core viewpoint of this paper is that China ought to put international measures on the agenda to prevent future demographic crises. In addition, this paper makes some suggestions based on China’s actual conditions and the experience of the developed world on this issue.
