Abstract
This study explores the phenomenon of return migration, focusing on Albanian students who have studied at La Sapienza University in Rome and their subsequent decision to return to Albania. The primary aim is to understand the underlying factors influencing their choice to either return or remain abroad, and how policies in Albania impact this decision-making process. Additionally, the study investigates the integration experiences of these returnees within the Albanian socio-economic and cultural context. Our research methodology comprises three principal components: Firstly, study visits to La Sapienza University to gather data on Albanian students, including their disciplines and academic trajectories. Secondly, a cross-sectional analysis through comprehensive surveys administered to a large sample of Albanian students who have studied at La Sapienza, aiming to capture a broad range of experiences and perspectives. Lastly, in-depth, unstructured interviews with 20 students who have returned to Albania, providing qualitative insights into their personal experiences, challenges, and integration processes. This case study contributes to the broader field of migration studies by focusing on an often-overlooked aspect: return migration. By examining the motivations, experiences, and integration processes of return migrants, this research offers a detailed exploration of the return migration phenomenon, particularly in the context of a developing country like Albania. The findings of this study aim to enhance understanding and provide a foundational framework for future research in this field.
