Stylometric Analysis in the Works of a Malaysian Chinese Poet: A Case Study of Ye Ming

Abstract

Generally, scholars exploring the themes of modern Malaysian Chinese poetry employ methods such as textual analysis, historical and cultural studies, and comparative research. Few utilize natural language processing capabilities from a stylometric perspective to analyze the vocabulary of poems, thereby investigating the imagery and themes within. This study selected a representative sample of 39 poems by Ye Ming, a fifth-generation Malaysian Chinese poet, as the data source. Using the Chinese text processing tool jieba in Python, these poems were analyzed. It was found that nouns and verbs are the most frequently used parts of speech in his poems. Following the path of “analyzing part of speech and word frequency — extracting imagery — exploring themes,” high-frequency words of the same part of speech were categorized into synonyms. This allowed for the categorization of Ye Ming’s poetry into four themes: interpersonal relationships, states of life, dimensions of time, and transformations of space.
