Abstract
The integration, organization and interaction of physical objects (properties in the technical lexicon of cinema) within a film frame serve specific narrative, aesthetic and symbolic functions. In Indian cinema, particularly in romantic duets, these objects assume added significance by imbuing new meanings to the romantic couple’s emotional subjectivity on screen, thereby shaping the affective practices they engage in. Taking up for analysis five decades of romantic duets in Malayalam cinema from the 1950s to the 1990s, this paper traces the shifting configurations of love via the objects that are featured prominently in the romantic duets. The study also explores the wider socio-political and economic conditions that might have functioned behind the selection of specific objects as the most visible and recurrent motifs within the popular romantic duets of Malayalam cinema across different historical periods.
