Abstract
As a significant part of modern higher education, the development of liberal education is inseparable from the popularisation of higher education. The author traces the history of Chinese higher education after the 1950s to present the emergence and development of modern liberal education in China. The development of China’s modern liberal education is not plain sailing but has met some doubts and challenges. From the perspective of the establishment of liberal education, China’s modern liberal education is the result of learning from the Western liberal education models. On the one hand, it has to face criticism from the West that liberal education is an “outdated” education with high investment and low return. On the other hand, it needs to face China’s domestic doubts about its Westernisation. From the perspective of educational purpose, liberal education is not a professional education in a specific academic field, but the cultivation of the individual’s thinking ability and practical abilities to promote the student’s all-around development. Therefore, it is considered to lose employability compared with professional education. This dissertation lists the above views in the extended literature review and further discusses the significance and value of modern liberal education in China’s higher education. Finally, the author explores the future development of liberal education under the background of expanded globalisation and China’s eradication of absolute poverty in 2021.
