An Investigation on the Implementation of Speaking Skills and Vocabulary Acquisition among Year Seven Students Using the 5 E’s in the UAE Private Schools

Abstract

This study aims to improve ESL year seven students’ speaking skills in one of the schools in Sharjah. The researcher’s research question is. “How can collaborative learning help in improving students’ speaking skills?” This study is based on interviews to collect initial data on improving students’ speaking skills. The researcher had observed the need to carry out this study because most of the students in the researcher’s school are UAE locals and lack confidence in speaking English properly because English is their second language. Action research is adapted to help students improve their speaking skills with the help of collaborative activities. Ten students participate in this study, and three parallel teachers are interviewed. The mixed-method approach is used to collect data from the pre-test to the post-test and observations. The findings are expected to help students improve their speaking skills and vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension. Students participate in collaborative activities, evaluate themselves in small group work, improve their speaking skills and eventually build confidence.
