Cosplay and Digital Identity Adoption Through Social Media to Sustain Self-Identity

Abstract

This study investigates the deciding factors of Jakarta Cosplayer Community members in choosing their selected costume for Cosplay. What significance is this community searching for through the costumes they choose and wear? They deeply immerse themselves in the figure or character from famous anime, manga, games, and their imaginary idol character. The authors argue they have self-esteem issues by trying to be someone out of their ordinary life. To justify, the author conducted the focus group discussion and used a semiotics approach to decode members of the Jakarta Cosplayer Community decisions. The result shows that this Cosplayer is seeking personal self-identity within their convention through a social media platform to achieve hierarchy and power to sustain their digital persona with the help of digital technologies through social media.
