Abstract
The study investigates the efficacy of the “4Ds” of Learning Approach—Discover, Discuss, Deepen, and Demonstrate—in enhancing student engagement within ESL contexts. Drawing from a comprehensive framework of student engagement dimensions, including academic, behavioral, affective, and cognitive aspects, the study examined the impact of the “4Ds”of learning approach on student participation and learning outcomes. Participants were first-year students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science program, divided into experimental and control groups attending Purposive Communication classes during the Academic Year 2023-2024. Pre-survey and post-survey assessments, utilizing the Student Engagement in Schools Questionnaire (SESQ), were conducted to gauge engagement levels before and after intervention. Results revealed moderate levels of engagement across academic, behavioral, affective, and cognitive dimensions in both experimental and control groups. However, the “4Ds” approach did not significantly enhance student engagement compared to traditional teaching methods, as indicated by independent sample T-tests. Despite challenges such as attrition rates, the study underscores the importance of innovative pedagogical strategies and inclusive practices in fostering student engagement in ESL classrooms. It is recommended to include personalized instruction, interactive methods, real-life connections, and timely feedback to accommodate diverse learning styles and promote active participation. By embracing inclusive practices and adapting teaching strategies, ESL educators can create a supportive learning environment conducive to student engagement and academic success. These findings contribute valuable insights to ESL pedagogy, informing the development of effective teaching practices, tailored to the unique needs of ESL students in diverse educational settings.
