ChatGPT as a Double-edged Tool in the EFL Classroom: The Case of English-Spanish Translation

Abstract

The context of Higher Education (HE) has undergone major changes as new digital tools have been introduced into the classroom, from online tasks such as WebQuests and Cybertasks integrated into the Moodle platform to even social networks such as WhatsApp or Instagram. The emergence of these resources in HE has fostered the development of teaching materials and new methodologies. The emergence of AI demands proper academic and professional performance. We, as teachers, have a duty to educate on its correct use and adapt it to the new reality to take advantage of its full potential. This study aims to address the challenge of integrating the use of ChatGPT in written expression tasks, as part of the Applied Linguistics in English Translation course, in the Bachelor’s Degree in English Studies. The current research aims to explore university students’ perceptions of AI, using a questionnaire designed in Google Forms; the potential benefits that ChatGPT can bring to the development of AI; and the students’ motivation regarding the use of the ChatGPT platform as a learning tool. Students are expected to use this tool to translate texts of medium-high complexity (proverbs, idioms and phrasal verbs) from a linguistic, idiomatic or cultural point of view by means of an online task integrated into the Moodle platform. This task purports to assess whether this tool becomes efficient when applied to English-Spanish translation, which will contribute to drawing some relevant conclusions on its usage in the EFL classroom.
