Development of Yoruba as Language of Instruction in Secondary Schools: A Concern of Every Stakeholder in the South-West Nigeria

Abstract

Language of instruction is vital in curriculum implementation. The role of indigenous language in national development cannot be undermined. However, most countries colonized by elsewhere colonial masters adopted their languages as media of expression. Nigeria is not left out among countries using foreign language as their lingual franca. There have been arguments in support of the adoption of foreign language, it is not without its challenges. Whereas, countries that use their national or indigenous as lingual franca do experience accelerated development in economy, technology, politics, commerce among others. Though Prof. Babs Fanfunwa experimented use of Yoruba as language of instruction in all subjects at secondary school level. Those taught in Yoruba eventually performed better than their counterparts taught in English language. Therefore, the paper considers the importance of mother tongue (Yoruba Language) in instructional delivery. It adopts a theoretical approach. The importance of mother tongue in dissemination of instruction was x-rayed. To this end, the paper discusses the need for development of Yoruba to the level of language of instruction for all subjects in secondary schools. The implications of adopting Yoruba Language as medium of instructions for the following stakeholders students, parents, teachers, curriculum developers, policy makers, publishing houses and authors in achieving development of Yoruba as language of instruction in secondary schools are discussed.
