Requiem for a Glacier: Empowering Communities Through Cryosphere Storytelling - Glacierwatch’s Approach to Climate Communication

Abstract

The cryosphere is changing at an unprecedented pace, with cascading effects on ecosystems, water resources, and communities worldwide. While the science is clear, translating complex findings into public understanding and meaningful engagement remains a challenge. Glacierwatch e.V., a Berlin-based grassroots initiative, bridges this gap by combining data-driven insights with community-centered storytelling to foster dialogue between researchers, affected communities, and the public. Our objectives are to (1) make cryosphere science accessible and relatable; (2) empower communities in glacier-affected regions to interpret and share their own experiences; and (3) support knowledge co-production among scientists, communicators, and local actors. We pursue these goals through social media explainers that translate glaciological concepts into visual narratives; collaborative workshops where citizens and researchers jointly interpret glacier data; and partnerships with Indigenous and local groups to create multilingual outreach materials rooted in lived experience. We also work with artists to connect broader audiences to the cryosphere on an emotional level. Our efforts have led to greater engagement among audiences previously disconnected from cryosphere topics, participation in citizen-led workshops, and use of our materials in education and community initiatives. By centering communities in communicating cryospheric change, Glacierwatch helps build resilience and create pathways where scientific evidence and lived experience reinforce one another. This presentation will share key lessons, successes, and challenges in bridging science and storytelling through inclusive communication.
