Advertising for Social Change: Students Go Upstream to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse

Abstract

In 2018, just after Michigan State University was rocked by the revelations that Larry Nassar had been sexually abusing girls for almost two decades, the Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center (TBCAC) began a creative partnership with Professor Ross Chowles in the MSU Department of Advertising. Professor Chowles is the co-founder of The Jupiter Drawing Room: Cape Town South Africa’s most awarded independent advertising agency. The TBCAC’s vision of “A World Without Abuse” was the spark for Professor Chowles to develop an assignment for his Advanced Creative Advertising students to produce a public service announcement about the prevention of Child Sexual Abuse. For the past 6 years, MSU students have spent 4 weeks researching, processing, and collaborating with TBCAC staff and each other, to understand Child Sexual Abuse, primary prevention, and social norms marketing. This initiative has, in turn, helped the TBCAC find ways to go beyond prevention education in our community. With evaluation data about student learning as well as compelling student ideas for primary prevention, this interactive presentation will illustrate ways to change individual, community and society’s understanding of Child Sexual Abuse and the ways that everyone can prevent CSA before a child is harmed.
