Abstract
In this book launch, we talk about Slicing Spaces: Performance of Architecture in Cinema, an edited book published in 2023 by Common Ground. It is selected as a finalists for the 2023 Common Ground Research Network Publishers Prize. Student coursework often stays hidden and is forgotten after assessment in academia. This unique collection mainly consists of book chapters adapted from ten-thousand-word master’s dissertations written in Architecture at Queen’s University Belfast. It is common (and required) to benefit from research in teaching but unusual to turn teaching into research. What these studies have in common is that each chapter ‘slices’ spaces like filmmakers do and analyses film space as a representation of architectural and/or urban space. Bringing cinema and architecture together through diverse viewpoints, this interdisciplinary book aims to trigger new ways of seeing the built environment, creative practices, and new media. Film is appreciated as an artistic product and film space as a mediated-experience of ‘lived space’ as discussed by Juhani Pallasmaa.
