Abstract
By the summer of 2023, it has become a commonplace to discuss the climate emergency; every news program features a seemingly endless series of weather-related disasters that span the full breadth of the globe. And yet, there is little to no discussion of how communities affected by climate change will adapt to these new, imperiling normal. What collective equipment is needed? Who will build it? Who will maintain it? What does the new climate regime requirement from design, new media, and the arts? In this practice-based presentation, I share some lessons from nearly a decade of work designing climate adaptation infrastructure in South and Southeast Asia, including some reflections on: digital and physical media in a changing climate; organizational aesthetics for social behaviour change; and, the attention crisis and how we create new patterns of engagement from within the confines of platform-as-surveillance capitalism. All of this will be shared in the spirit of CESA, as an opening for shared, collective action and new collaborations.
