Abstract

This study examines how age difference affects people’s participation in the leading desired values in Douala. The following hypothesis was formulated: Age disparity positively influences one’s participation in the main values in Douala such as domestic comfort, health seeking behaviour, feeding habits, and leisure activities. Poverty was measured using the relative method. The questionnaire was constructed drawing on the predominant values: the things one needs to live comfortably in the city of Douala. It was self-administered, employing the systematic sampling method. We discovered that people who are below thirty have the least percentage (8%) of persons who earn above the poverty line: 177,000frs CFA per month, while those between forty-one and fifty-one have the highest (34.04%). The latter are much better off than the other ranges. Although they do not have good feeding habits like those below thirty or health seeking behaviour like those between thirty and forty and those above fifty-one, they earn better salary, rent expensive and modern houses, and have a much better domestic comfort than the other age ranges. Although those below thirty have significantly better feeding habits, they are more dependent and live in family houses.
