Abstract

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) marks a paradigm shift in user experience (UX) design. Specifically, the evolution of generative AI tools has enriched the visual aspects of UX design and user-centric service planning. Despite the potential for generative AI to enhance the UX design process, uncertainties persist regarding their effectiveness for designers. This study evaluates the usability of current generative AI tools in persona design and provides expert insights for their future development. To critically assess the current generative AI persona tools, the NASA-Task Load Index assessment was selected, and interviews were conducted. Despite the innovative outcomes of generative AI, using them as the final persona results remains challenging. Although the physical effort involved has been reduced, the mental effort required continues to pose a challenge. To reduce users’ mental fatigue, future generative AI should provide accurate data rationale for personas simultaneously to edit related persona details and offer various options based on the purpose throughout the UX design process. Consequently, when generative AI advances to a level of proficiency that allows design experts to directly apply AI, the design process can be considerably transformed. At this stage, uncertainties surrounding AI in design will be mitigated, enabling AI to transition from a supporting role to that of a collaborator.
