Abstract

Welcome to this special double issue of The International Journal of Arts in Society. The contributions to this journal offer a wide range of voices, including those working within organizations executing their attempts at bringing together engagement and curatorial work as well as those who are looking into those organizations and initiatives with curiosity and criticality. The practice of “engagement curating” has arisen amidst calls to radically rethink museums and exhibition practices and labor organizing in the arts sector as a way to negotiate these concerns while working at the intersection of historically compartmentalized divisions of curating, archiving, interpreting, educating, public programming, etc. This special double issue intends to share reflections on what works, what does not work, and what is possible moving forward for these hybrid practices.
